Sertoli cells serve as supportive cells that provide nourishment and structural support for developing sperm. They also create a protective environment that shields sperm from harmful substances and immune system attacks.
Another crucial function of Sertoli cells is forming the blood-testis barrier, a structure that separates developing sperm cells from the bloodstream. This barrier ensures that sperm development occurs in a controlled environment.
Damage or dysfunction in these cells can impair sperm production and lead to infertility. One condition associated with impaired sperm production is Non-Obstructive Azoospermia, in which the testes fail to produce sufficient sperm.
Medical evaluation may include hormonal tests and erotic microscopic examination of testicular tissue.
